Over the weekend we were at The Solamar for Chris and Roya’s wedding. A lot of times when it comes to shooting in hotels for wedding there are downsides. Lighting. I love shooting in natural light and prefer to only bust out the flash during the reception or if we plan on using off-camera flash. Jeff and I were stuck on the 8th floor looking around a bridal suite that had minimal lighting and not enough space to set up a shot. Plus we wanted something different.
We had to separate ourselves from the scene and tour the hotel a little more. It was still pretty dark downstairs and in the lobby. It has a beautiful look to it, but not what we were looking for. So we got lost in a side room back behind the kitchen. The most beautiful light was coming in through the side doors and even though we were stuck between two kitchen doors and waiters going in and out, Jeff knew I pitched tent and planned to set up the shot right then and there. There is a confidence that comes with knowing your camera, and also using great equipment! Talent is one thing, but some shots (such as detailed ones like rings) are nearly impossible to get unless you have the right
Ring shots can be a little tricky, if you’re attempting to shoot them with anything but the 100mm. Even the 85 fixed and 50 fixed don’t get me the same results because I can’t get close enough without hearing that funky noise on my camera telling me there is no way the shutter is going down to take this image! See that photo above? I got MUCH closer than that. We love to use the 100mm (Canon). Love it so much that we have two of ‘em! The macro look is such: zoomed in and up close, background has that nice blurred effect called “bokeh” in the photo world. I have only done a couple of giveaways in the past and figured I would start up again. It’s my tithe, if you will. Plus I’m nice! Like really, really nice! Kidding.
I know there are many photographers out there who give away free photo shoots every now and then. I even tried it once and the couple was very deserving and sweet! But I figure nowadays a free photo shoot is like purchasing a Groupon. I want my work to be a little more valued in the sense that it is actually worth something to be in front of my lens. So then I thought, lens. I want to eventually teach photography, teach young aspiring wedding photographers one of these days through workshops and so this would be my way of reaching out to other photographers out there. Getting to network and do a little giveaway for them. So! If you’re a newbie, or just a mom or dad who wants to start playing around a little more with the SLR that you have, this would be a great way to do so! Dabble in macro shots, just getting to know your camera a little more in general!
SO! We’re giving it away! That’s right! This lens brand new can cost you close to $600 before tax and shipping. I haven’t quite let Jeff in on this news yet but it’s something I want to do! Rules to enter are once again fairly simple! This time ANYONE can participate! The winner must pay SHIPPING costs depending on where they live. (We are from San Diego, CA if you wanna factor that in!) Small price to pay for a yummy lens that has been barely used (perhaps only 3-4 times until we realized we only need to carry one of them around!. Obviously you would want to have a Canon camera to use this beast of a lens. It’s a beauty though, and even if you don’t and you win, well all the more an awesome reason to purchase one! It’s a great savings to anyone who is starting out, or even someone who has been in the industry. I know I could use a free lens here or there, and even if I could sell this and save up for my next purchase, I say what comes around goes around! (bigger and better giveaways in the future, I promise!)
